On Reviews and Retribution
“I don’t Tweet…. There used to be too much emphasis on reviews. I think the Internet changed that. People don’t support each other anymore, in any industry. People are so eager to push somebody down β not even trash-talking, like the schoolyard bully. People ‘boo’ each other on the Internet, because it’s so immediate. Like, a person can talk shit about another actor, another director, because they’re protected by a screen. It’s super easy to do it β there’s no confrontation. You don’t have to meet the person.”
On Weight and Black Swan
“It honestly doesn’t bother me. I don’t go up or down. I lost weight once for Black Swan, I gained my weight back for real life. And that’s it. There hasn’t been any fluctuation since. But I also don’t mind talking about it, because there’s nothing to hide. I really don’t. Itβs not like I’m ashamed. I’m a very happy 123-pound person.”
On Sports and Baseball vs. Golf
“I watch the real SportsCenter just so I know what people are talking about. I love basketball and I love baseball. Don’t love football β don’t dislike it, don’t care for it, don’t know it. I find golf to be incredibly boring. And people argue that so is baseball, but I would prefer to go to a baseball game and have my beer and hot dog and sit there and scream and root for a team than to walk around 18 holes.”
On Scripted and Unscripted
“I get very uncomfortable at giving speeches. Like weddings and birthdays. I have no problem going on stage and presenting, because I feel like it’s not even really me, it’s like a surreal moment. They’re scripted β like the Oscars, let’s say. Not a fear, not a problem in the world. Having to talk at my best friend’s wedding? I was like, Ahh, oh my god. What do I say? How do I β Like, panicked. Because I cared more.”
On SNL and Live and Not-Live
“I am so scared of screwing up an SNL because it’s live β you can’t have a do-over. It’s kind of scripted, kind of not. It changes all at the last minute. It’s cue cards. Skits get moved in and out. I’ve seen enough of my friends do it and I’m so proud of them β because to me it’s the most frightening thing. It’s purely psychological β there’s no rhyme or reason to it β but I look at SNL as… it’s not like testing myself or testing my limits or pushing myself. And I respect that show immensely. Not to say I am never going to do it.”
On Social Media and Mystery
“Fame forty years ago is very different than what fame is today. Forty years ago, you could go to a restaurant and you could go to the movies. You had a life. And, yes, you could walk down the street and people would holler and yell at you, but people didn’t have phones, let alone cellphones with, you know, cameras. Let alone instant Twitters and Instagrams and tweeting your location or talking about it on whatever β however these networks work. That instant source of location takes away from the mystery or the intrigue of the person β and it adds to the accessibility.”
